Hidden along secluded roads are places where memories still live

Discover paintings, stories, and reflections that celebrate the beauty of America's forgotten barns.

Some places are forgotten by the world but never by you.

Every year, old barns disappear from our countryside. Along with them, we loose pieces of our history, our heritage, and the stories they carried.

Think Back: Have You Ever...

* Driven past an old barn and wondered who built it?

* Thought about the generations who once worked that land?

* Pictured the children running in and out and around it?

Felt that some places deserve to be remembered?

Forgotten barn beauty is more than watercolor paintings. It is a tribute to faith, hard work, family, and the beauty that still lives in rural America.

Before And After

Bring These Stories Home

Forgotten barn beauty is a beautifully illustrated digital book featuring original watercolor paintings that celebrate the captivating beauty of rural America

A beautiful red barn — but look closer and there are blues in it, unexpected and exciting, the kind of thing that makes you stop and look twice. Luscious green trees full of leaves frame it from behind and to the right, with tall overgrown grass spreading all across the bottom. The sky is full of clouds. And in the foreground three chickens doing exactly what chickens do — pecking, looking, moving around like they own the place. Because they do. Life is living itself everywhere in this painting. Every inch of it.

You think you know what a red barn looks like. You have seen a hundred of them. But this one has blues in it — which was not expected — but once you see them you can't unsee them and it actually looks like it belongs. I painted this because the familiar deserves a second look. The red barn, the green trees, the tall grass, the cloudy sky — all of it is exactly what you expect. And then it isn't. And that's the whole point.

You can feel the heat before you even step into this painting. The shadows on the barn are deep and intense — the kind that only show up on the hottest days, when the sun has no mercy and the air goes thick the moment you step outside. The barn sits up high on the horizon, a wide field of grass below it, trees behind it on the right, thick bushes crowding in on the left. Everything exactly where it should be. This scene composed itself.

Have you ever pulled over on a country road just because something caught your eye? That's what happened here. Not because anything dramatic was going on — just a barn, a field, a hot country day. But the way it was all sitting together, the shadows, the horizon, the trees, the bushes — composed so well I was thinking nature had done all the work for me. All I had to do was pay attention and paint what was already there.

The boards that are left look wet and mossy, darkened by a moisture that never quite leaves this place. The trees and bushes and grass have grown over, around and through this spot as nature keeps reclaiming what used to be somebody else's place. You can see the barn is back there somewhere, but the land doesn't make it easy to find. This is a place that has stopped waiting to be visited.

Every barn I paint takes me back to the country my parents came from. Not this barn specifically — but the idea of living off the land, away from the hustle and bustle of city life. The places that held whole lives inside them and now stand quietly disappearing. I paint them because I don't want to forget. And because somewhere in you, there's a place like this too — something appreciated in your heart that you don't want to lose either.

Meet The Artist

Hello, I’m Edward Wade, a watercolor artist with a deep appreciation for the quiet beauty of rural America.

For years I’ve traveled back roads with my camera, drawn to weathered barns that many people pass without a second glance. Their faded paint, worn timbers, and leaning walls tell stories of hard work, perseverance, family, and a simpler way of life. Although time has left its mark on them, their beauty has never disappeared.

Every painting begins with one of my own photographs. Back in my studio, I transform those moments into watercolor, seeking not only to capture what the barn looked like, but also the feeling it stirred within me. My hope is that each painting invites you to pause, reflect, and rediscover the beauty that can still be found in forgotten places.

Forgotten Barn Beauty is more than a collection of paintings. It is my way of preserving these rural treasures before they are lost to time and of honoring the memories they represent. If these pages encourage you to slow down, take the scenic route, or see an old barn with fresh eyes, then this project has fulfilled its purpose.

Thank you for allowing me to share this journey with you. I hope these paintings and stories bring warmth, inspiration, and a renewed appreciation for the enduring beauty that still stands across the countryside.

THE PROCESS

Every Step begins with a barn

My process begins with a feeling. There is something about the beauty of the old and rustic that captures my attention — the weathered wood, faded paint, and signs of time that tell a story. These forgotten barns inspire me to stop, sketch, and study the character that makes each one unique.

Through watercolor, I try to capture more than just the barn itself. I want to preserve the memories, emotions, and quiet beauty found in these aging structures. Each painting is my way of honoring the past and keeping the stories of these forgotten places alive.
